Regime forces have targeted the entire Damascus Rural province in fierce shelling attacks in recent weeks, killing and injuring dozens of civilians. Clashes ensued between Assad forces and the Free Syrian Army (FSA) on Tuesday after the FSA attempted to intervene in the latest round of attacks. Assad reinforcements were seen heading to the area, possibly in response to the FSA’s intervention.
At least 19 civilian casualties were documented in a brutal and unrelenting shelling attack on Alghoota Asharqiyah on Tuesday. The number of casualties is expected to rise, as many remain buried in the rubble of homes destroyed in the attack.
More than ten towns and cities in the Damascus Rural area are declared disaster areas after the latest round of attacks, including Zamalka, ‘Arbeen and Douma. Residents are not able to flee from their homes due to the constant shelling and snipers who target anyone in the street.
Humanitarian conditions are dire. The injured are unable to seek medical care and makeshift hospitals have insufficient equipment to treat the critically injured. Shipments of food, water and medicine cannot reach the affected areas.
Several massacres have been discovered in Damascus Rural in recent weeks. Regime forces continue to systematically target civilians, often entering homes and stabbing entire families to death. Some families have simply disappeared and many unidentified bodies have been found thrown in the streets.
Homes, schools, farms and houses of worship have been targeted and destroyed.
